Medial Branch Block (MBB)/Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Our pain specialist will first perform a diagnostic test injection (medial branch block) to determine the source of your pain. Depending on the root cause, your specialist may offer you a radiofrequency ablation which can provide lasting pain relief.
What is a Medial Branch Block (MBB)?
Inflammation/arthritis of the small joints (facet joints) in your spine can cause neck pain, mid-back pain, and low back pain. A Medial Branch Block is a test procedure to determine whether your pain is coming from these joints.
If pain is relieved from this procedure, you may be a candidate for a radiofrequency ablation procedure which can provide relief for several months to years.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?
Radiofrequency ablation (also called facet neurotomy/radiofrequency neurotomy/rhizotomy) uses radio waves to disrupt a nerve’s ability to transmit pain signals. When this is performed, pain that is caused by arthritis can be relieved for several months to years.
