Spinal Cord Stimulation
This is a minimally invasive cutting edge option that treats your chronic nerve pain without the need for invasive surgery and/or for those who continue to have pain after surgery.
What is Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)?
This is an innovative option for patients who have had chronic pain that has been unresponsive to multiple treatments. A spinal cord stimulator is similar to a pacemaker for the heart. Under live x-ray guidance, implanted wires are placed next to the spinal cord. The wires are programmed to send signals that disrupt chronic pain signaling pathways between your spinal cord and your brain. If your specialist finds that this is an appropriate treatment option for you, they will start by placing a temporary spinal cord stimulator for a ‘trial week’. The trial is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed in the clinic, and usually takes less than an hour to complete. The device is charged externally and you will receive a controller (iPod) to change the settings to help cover your painful areas. The trial will help you and your doctor determine whether you are a candidate for a permanent implant.
